Interesting Facts About the Cavs

From bizarre ownership decisions to championship glory, the Cavaliers have one of the most colorful histories in the NBA.

The Stepien Rule

Former owner Ted Stepien was so bad at trading draft picks that the NBA created the 'Stepien Rule' to prevent teams from trading first-round picks in consecutive years. He also made polka the team's fight song and delivered copies to radio stations with a pound of kielbasa.

Crazy Mascots

Under Stepien's ownership, the team had unusual entertainers including 'Crazy George' who shaved a woman's leg while spinning a basketball, and 'The Amazing Boot' who crunched beer cans with his teeth and blew up firecrackers in his mouth.

Historic Comeback

In 2016, the Cavs became the FIRST team in NBA history to come back from a 3-1 deficit in the Finals. LeBron's chase-down block on Andre Iguodala is considered one of the greatest plays ever.

The Decision... and The Return

LeBron's 2010 'Decision' to leave Cleveland was one of sports' most controversial moments. When he returned in 2014, his open letter 'I'm Coming Home' crashed Sports Illustrated's website.

Almost Different

Before settling on 'Cavaliers,' the team almost became 'The Jays' or 'The Presidents.' The name Cavaliers won a name-the-team contest, suggesting a group of daring, fearless men.

LeBron's Dominance

LeBron James has scored more than double any other player in Cavaliers history (23,119 points). He also leads the franchise in steals, rebounds, assists, free throws, AND 3-pointers.

Rookie Royalty

Both LeBron James (2004) and Kyrie Irving (2012) won Rookie of the Year while playing for Cleveland—two #1 overall picks who would later team up for a championship.

The Curse Breaker

The 2016 championship ended a 52-year drought for Cleveland sports. The last major championship had been the 1964 Browns. Fans literally cried in the streets.
